New Yorker plays 'Star-Spangled Banner' on trumpet to applaud for medical workers
A New York resident played the national anthem on their trumpet on March 29 during a citywide celebration of medics and essential workers serving the city amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
This footage was taken by a Reddit user living on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. It was one of numerous celebrations on a rain-soaked Sunday evening, aiming to give thanks and encourage first responders, medical staff, and all essential workers helping the city cope with the pandemic.
The uploader said the anonymous trumpeter started playing shortly after 7 pm, joining the existing chorus of cheers, applause, and banging pots and pans that had begun shortly before. Residents cheered louder when the musician started playing, halting at first then bringing it home to greater applause.
As of the morning of March 31, New York City had recorded over 40,000 confirmed positive COVID-19 cases, as well as 932 deaths tied to the virus.
